The next two days

A couple more big days. One without power/internet so we stayed and moved on early. After leaving Taroom, we headed North along the Leichardt highway to Banana. Turning left along the Dawson highway to Springsure where we camped overnight at the Lions Park about 1.5klms out of town, below Virgin Rock. An amazing place. A massive escarpment not unlike Mt Arapiles near Hamilton, but the image of the virgin Mary can be seen by some, and is illuminated at night.Leaving Springsure by 7.30 this morning we arrived at Emerald nice and early. Time to check e-mails etc at free wi-fi courtesy of Maccas, do some shopping for the next few days there, a great shopping centre on the Clermont road. Head off to the Willows, out along the Capricorn highway to the gem fields where friends are staying.490 k's to Taroom, 400+ to Springsure, about 250 today and thats enough for a few days.Lunch was at a park at Moura, not far from Banana, the photo is of a face shovel some 27 cub.mtrs....

Day 5 Moree to Taroom

Wow, another biggy. We left Moree just on 9:00 this morning and called in at Goondiwindi to see friends at The Country Roads motor inn. It's situated on the Leichardt hwy next to Maccas and a servo that was the highest diesel seller in Australia. We passed by large paddocks sodden from the rain that fell right across the area over the last few weeks. Cotton "trash" lines the road on both sides out of Moree.Lunch today was at Moonie and quite a pleasant stop there today. We had lunch here 24 years ago and were nearly blown off the face of the earth. Heading North to Miles was new country for us today. From Goondiwindi, the traffic has lessened. The road has not improved though. A different observation now from seeing farm types of utes to seeing mining vehicles. Small caravan parks in the small towns now have a plethora of small cabins (dongers) in them and not much room for travellers, more's the pity.

Day 4-Moree

Much quieter day being a lay day. Washing done, although a little cooler today 16C, still doing it. Lunch at the Moree RSL and a spot of shopping. Look around town which is normally by-passed by the highway and back for a 20 minute spa for me. Hoping that my arms will benefit from the mineral water and heat, quite pleasant.

Day 3

We both had a restless night last night in Dubbo. The park was close to the city centre and bordered quite a lot of open ground down to the river. Signs throughout the amenities block warned us not to leave valuables in vehicles at tourist attractions or in parks. So, any outside noise woke us both. Fortunately, the overnight temp was so low that it obviously deterred too much criminal activity and we left this morning without becoming crime statistics. Onward and upwards. Lunch at Narrabri and on to Moree for the night. We stayed in this park in 1984 on our first major road trip North. I was able to remember the hotel on the corner where we turned to the park. The park has changed with the addition of more cabins, but still nice and neat, same amenities block and I remembered the high fence along the rivers edge. It was 4C when we left Dubbo and 21C when we stopped for lunch Cotton trash along the roads edges and unending kilometres of the Piliga forest were other things we drove through. The Newell highway hasn't changed but it has deteriorated. Several delays again today with the stop/slow of road works means they are working on it but there is SO much left to do.

Day 1 mark2

Big  enough day today, made it to Neranderra, just the 400klms but far enough. We have stayed in this park before, about 34 years ago, surprised they don't have our details still on file. How can they hope to keep up.
This is a Top Tourist park, well laid out, plenty of room, pick a site...Amenities blocks look nice, outdoor barbecue,Gazebo area looks out over a lake and boat ramp below the steep drop behind our site. We paid 25.20 which included our members discount. Another cold night but fan heater works very well. Probably make it to Dubbo tomorrow, stay tuned.
